Pulmocap Hedera
Traditionally, common Ivy leaf (Hedera helix) is used to help relieve symptoms that affect the respiratory system. Pulmocap Hedera syrup contains a dry extract of ivy leaf that has a secretolytic effect which will thin out mucus in the respiratory tract and act as an expectorant in case of productive cough.
Ivy leaf extract exhibit also spasmolytic/bronchodilatating effects, anti-inflammatrory effects and a lot of secondary pharmacological actions (i.e. antimicrobial, antiviral, anti-oxidant, hepatoprotectiv effects,…) that are demonstrated in in-vitro and in-vivo experiments. The dry extract of ivy leaf in Pulmocap Hedera syrup is included in the corresponding EMEA herbal monograph which ensures sufficient safety and efficacy of the extract based on well-established use. The formulation is sugar free, contains no colorants, no parabens or added alcohol.
The data from numerous clinical trials and non-clinical experiments suggest that Ivy leaf extracts have a recognized efficacy as an expectorant in case of productive cough. The saponins present in Ivy leaf are responsible for this effect.
Several in-vitro experiments show an effect of the saponin, α-Hederin, on the β- receptors of the respiratory tract which could lead to a spasmolytic effect. This is supported by an in-vivo study with guinea pigs in which a statistically significant bronchodilatating effect was observed.
Several nonclinical experiments suggest that ivy leaf may have a helpful effect in the control of inflammatory processes. However, the saponins present in the extracts of ivy leaf show lower activity than the classic anti-inflammatory drugs.
